The Lego Proposition…

On a daily basis I dream about some outlandish scheme of quitting my job and becoming an “artist”. And the term “artist” is totally open to interpretation and in my opinion there are limitless forms of art.

And so today I present to you one of those schemes – I want to quit my job and become…

a LEGO® artist??

As a kid, I had an obsession with LEGOs…I loved to follow the instructions, building some sort of castle or space station, and then say fuck it and bulldoze the hell out of the model, starting over from scratch and building whatever my tiny brain could come up with. The sky was the limit…or I guess in my case it was the ceiling…but whatever.

A couple years ago, I experimented with some LEGO art for a Christmas project. My brother and I attempted to make a tree using the thousands of LEGO pieces that were leftover from our childhood. Our discovery? It’s wicked hard!! But also fun and challenging. To my regret, we never finished that damn tree, primarily because we realized how much time was involved in the project and we were short on time already.

So where am I going with all this? First, I present to you the badass brick artist Nathan Sawaya. This guy is 100% radical. Here’s an article about him quitting his job and becoming a full-time LEGO artist; And go here to visit his website and LEGO gallery. His stuff is ridiculous.

I’ve decided that I should go for attempt #2 with LEGO art. So my proposal, which I’ve decided is due on Thanksgiving, is to have something beautiful made entirely out of little beautiful building blocks.

I’ll keep you updated on this outlandish project.

And also…Mr. Waldo (from the Where’s Waldo books) turned 21 years old on Sunday. To celebrate the little guy launched a new website: www.findwaldo.com
